The English language teaching and learning : my discovery

The English language teaching and learning : my discovery Ebenezer C. Eze Apart from being widely spoken globally, the relevance of the English language in Nigeria, apart from being the language for education and official gatherings, includes its use for recording, sharing and storing of official government documents, its use for broadcasting government information, its use for writing government contracts both locally and internationally with either companies or nations, and its broad use by individuals from different ethnicities for communication between each other or among one another. For effective learning of the English language to ensure , its teachers should be good at it, both in writing and in speech. If not, students would learn what the language is not and as such would be speakers of a language that does not exist. Knowledge of content, among other qualities of a good teacher, is paramount for effective teaching of any subject, the English language inclusive. Poor teaching of the English language and its poor learning will affect the students negatively in terms of reading text books written in the language, understanding good English language speakers, communicating effectively both in writing and in speech. My personal study revealed that some people who are good in written English, are poor in the spoken one. This I arrived at, by observing students express wrongly the same idea they expressed correctly in written exam. Some of these people caught in the aforementioned web, are students of English language education, and teachers of same. The unchecked level of examination malpractice in schools, make it difficult to have a near perfect assessment of the level of English language knowledge among students. That not withstanding, no cheater hardly escapes the strokes of a thorough assessment of one's spoken English ability. This is why researchers should not use written English as a basis for the assessment of the quality of English language knowledge by either a teacher or a learner. I am a paid research - based writer, book editor /proof reader, literature reviewer, an English teacher in addition to being a DENTAL PRACTITIONER. Email : matematcher2022@gmail.com +2347036849019
